Burglar wakes men with spice rub, sausage attack

The victims told deputies they awoke Saturday morning to the stranger applying
spices to one of them and striking the other with an 8-inch sausage.
Burrimond said money allegedly stolen in the burglary was recovered. The
sausage was tossed away by the fleeing suspect and eaten by a dog.

When my boss asked me if I'd heard this I thought she was lying. Sadly, no.

Crack and Cack

From Spiegel online. Click the link if you want to see the picture.

"Henry's whip" is the house speciality at Beijing's Guolizhuang restaurant. It's
a sheep's penis on a stick covered in mayonnaise, sweet cheese, served on a bed
of lettuce.

MMMMM Penis on a stick....seriously...this dish seems like a whole series of culinary cum genital puns...somehow...except the lettuce.

And from WBZTV Boston:
"Fluffy," a 45-pound alligator snapping turtle, is now living
there on loan to the aquarium's "Killer Instincts" exhibit. Before coming to Boston, Fluffy
actually belonged to a drug dealer in New York who used the turtle to guard his
stash. The aquarium told WBZ this is actually becoming more and more common.

Done and Done

This has been a frightfully productive week. It's unnerving.

I got my aquarium broken down, re-substrated, replanted and functioning pretty well. At least none of the fish are dead. Got my car serviced (well...they're still waiting on a part for the radiator.) Got some poems done and am just about ready to send out more packets. I'm spent.

~*~

I'm working a graveyard shift. 11pm to 7 am. I sleep while it's still light out. Better than at night. It's bizarre. Most nights I wake up 3 or 4 times. Twice if I'm very lucky. Lately I only wake up once (unless I forget to turn off the phone which happened today "Hello?" (background noise static static) "HELLO." "Hi, this is LaShawn from Verizon, could I speak to Rob." "There's no Rob here." Click. I hate when people ask for Rob, or Bob, thinking that those are the default settings for the name Robert. All you're doing is pissing my happy ass off, insuring that I won't listen to your spiel or even consider buying what you're selling. Seriously--who tells these poor people that sort of plastic familiarity is charming? I feel the same way about overly-attentive, perky, chatty wait staff. I don't want you crouched down at my level. I don't care what you think about an entree unless I ask. It's not going to help your tip. Actually, I'll be more likely to tip better if you come and go as unobtrusively as possible. Check on our drinks, see if we want coffee or dessert then get the hell outta there. I know I'm not like most people--but seriously, this aggressively friendly, overly familiar stuff has got to go.

~*~

Project Runway Season 4 started tonight. All I can say is "Meh." I've got no real dog in this fight...which is strange, because I usually latch onto people the first episode. Way way way too much metallic fabrics. Very 80s cuts and proportions on a lot of the outfits. If this is where fashion is heading, then I'll just check out til next season. I lived through the 80s once. I don't want to go back. It's fun to have this back though. Brian and I always post mortem the episodes on the phone before he goes to bed. We don't agree on things...and we rarely like the same people, but it's fun. Just being able to be snarky and funny together is a great gift. Best line of the night: Heidi Klum saying "She looked like she was pooing fabric down the runway."

~*~
My arrangements are all set for AWP. I got all my confirmations via email today. Huzzah! I'm frightfully excited. It's my first one. And I'm trying to remember the last time I was in NYC. It had to be at least 10 years, 12 hair colors and 3 dress sizes ago.

Death Becomes Her

So the old representation of Mexico's Santa Muerte was too scary? She needs an Extreme Makeover to be au courant? Fine.

But did they have to make her look like Anjelica Huston in The Mists of Avalon?

I got an email from a friend last night with the subject: Of course we saw it and thought of you!. Apparently in Salem, MA there is a rather pruriently named liquor store. Enjoy the pictures.

So...the Pittsburgh Steelers have adopted a mascot this year to celebrate their 75th anniversary. This of course has sparked some debate--some people hate the idea. Whatev. I could give two jerks. Until you hear what they named the mascot. Then it's totally my type of deal. The Steelers organization held a "name our mascot" contest, won by Diane Roles of Valencia, Pa. And what's the mascot name you ask, dear reader? Steely McBeam.

Steely frickin' McBeam. There's a fine line between macho and gay. You dear Diane have jetted across it in Olympic style. God bless you.

Sex & Candy

A couple of choice snippets from today's Savage Love column from the Onion's AV Club.

"The percentage of teenagers having intercourse began to plateau in 2001 and has failed to budge since," wrote the Washington Post. "Experts are unsure of the reasons for the change, but [point to] the possibility that some irreducible portion of the teenage population can never be dissuaded from having sex."

**

I'm a 27-year-old lesbian, and my girlfriend of two years broke up with me. When I moved out, I left the sex toys I knew were hers and took the rest. The first night she was back after I left, she texted me to ask for specific toys back! I made some insensitive comments about how I took the toys because I thought I might find someone who actually wanted to have sex with me, and she got angry. I ended up giving her all the toys back because I didn't want them any more after the argument.

What should the etiquette be around sex toys when two women break up, especially when strong feelings are involved?

Babe In Toyless Land

Have two women ever broken up without strong feelings being involved?

The etiquette around the division of sex toys after a breakup is the same that applies to the division of any property post-breakup, BITL. The splitting couple has a tense discussion about divvying up their shared property; if an agreement can't be reached, they sue the shit out of each other. It would be foolish to sue an ex over a dusty collection of strap-ons and vibrators, of course, as replacing the average sex-toy collection would be less expensive than a lawsuit. But exes have taken each other to court over dumber shit—custody of dogs, cats, kids, etc.

Frankly I'm surprised the "It was an initiation" and "To give someone a disease" options aren't on the list. Likewise..."horny." I wonder if "to shut them up", "to get a ride home," "a free meal," or "I needed a place to sleep" popped up at all.

Um...Did I Hear this right?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

So I was catching up on the news on telly this evening and there was an ad for this RLS med, Miraplex. I didn't really pay attention until the list of side effects (b/c honestly...those are the best parts...ok...excepting Botox's "Express Yourself" ads.) I'm only halfway paying attention until I hear "Or if you feel increased gambling, sexual or other urges." Curious ...those are not the usual side effects. Later, I'm flipping networks and come across the Requip ad--and it's almost exactly the same side effects. Excepting Requip might also make you sweaty. So there you are...stuck in traffic, simply trying to steady your legs, sweating, horny and fighting the urge to play nickle slots.

Burn, Baby, Burn...

This week is proving to be an orgy of insane news. From AOL News.

Man Burns Down Trailer in Online Feud

ELM MOTT, Texas (July 26) - A Navy man who got mad when someone mocked him as a "nerd" over the Internet climbed into his car and drove 1,300 miles from Virginia to Texas to teach the other guy a lesson.

As he made his way toward Texas, Fire Controlman 2nd Class Petty Officer Russell Tavares posted photos online showing the welcome signs at several states' borders, as if to prove to his Internet friends that he meant business.

When he finally arrived, Tavares burned the guy's trailer down.

This week, Tavares, 27, was sentenced to seven years in prison after pleading no contest to arson and admitting he set the blaze.

[Snip]

The feud started when Anderson, who runs a haunted house near Waco, joined a picture-sharing Web site and posted his artwork and political views. After he blocked some people from his page because of insults and foul language, they retaliated by making obscene digitally altered pictures of him, he said.

Anderson, who went by the screen name "Johnny Darkness," traded barbs with Tavares, aka "PyroDice."

Investigators say Tavares boiled over when Anderson called him a nerd and posted a digitally altered photo making Tavares look like a skinny boy in high-water pants, holding a gun and a laptop under a "Revenge of the Nerds" sign.

At least in the Broward County Penal System. From the Miami Herald. This story is truly an embarrassment of riches.

Inmate found guilty in masturbation trial

A Broward prisoner accused of committing a sex act while he was alone in his jail cell was found guilty Tuesday of indecent exposure.

Terry Lee Alexander, 20, unsuccessfully fought the charge, which had been brought by a female Broward Sheriff's Office detention deputy who saw him perform the sex act in his cell in November.

The sole witness in the case, BSO Deputy Coryus Veal, testified that Alexander did not try to hide what he was doing as most prisoners do. Veal saw him perform the act while she was working in a glass-enclosed master control room, 100 feetfrom Alexander's cell. There was no video tape or other witnesses.

[snip]

Alexander's attorney argued that the prison cell was a private place and that what Alexander was doing was perfectly normal.

''Did other inmates start masturbating because of Mr. Alexander?'' McHugh asked Veal. ``Did you call a SWAT team?''

''I wish I had,'' Veal answered.

Veal, who has charged seven other inmates with the same offense, insisted that she was not against the act itself -- just the fact that Alexander was so blatant about it. Most inmates, she testified, do it in bed, under the blankets.

Veal said this was the third time she caught Alexander, and she had had enough.

[snip]

He also said that none of the jurors had a problem with the sex act, per se.

The case drew snickers in the courtroom, especially during jury selection, when prospective jurors were quizzed about their own habits.

Defense attorney Kathleen McHugh faced 17 prospective jurors and asked point-blank who among them had never done that particular sex act.

No hands went up.

The website How Appealing goes a littler further detailing the Defense's line of questioning regarding prospective jurors' hand-hockey habits.

During jury selection Wednesday in the case of inmate Terry Lee Alexander, all seven jurors admitted to attorneys that they have masturbated. The awkward questioning was posed by defense attorney Kathleen McHugh, who faced 17 prospective jurors and asked point-blank who among them had never masturbated. No hands went up. Then, she went one-by-one, asking each prospective juror if he or she had ever masturbated. All nine men said yes, two of the 10 women said no."

Emphases mine.

And Now For Something Completely Different

The other day I was flipping around and caught part of a documentary on BBC America called Love Me, Love My Doll about men who have the high quality silicone "companion" dolls. I saw part of two profiles. One was an Englishman, fond of posing his dolls in day-t0-day situations (reading the newspaper) and photographing them with himself in the picture. He also kept his mother's room as a shrine, down to the point that there was a note on the garbage can saying it was not to be emptied or added to. The other was a rather scary guy from rural VA who was also into guns. I couldn't watch more than that...it was just too prurient. It's one thing to do documentaries about subcultures...it's another thing to highlight the oddities of people too socially awkward to form strong bonds with other humans.

Needless to say this reminded me of something I read about in Spin last month. There are apparently sex dolls for dogs now.

This is the Hotdoll.

New Adventures in Misanthropy

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
The Proud Parents of a Future Pariah

Because you're fertile and can produce a baby doesn't necessarily mean you should. Nothing proves my point more than these people from New Zealand who want to name their kid 4real.

One New Zealand judge even blocked one family from using the name it chose. The judge said the name was unfair to the child.

"Initially, the reaction is, 'Are you for real?'" said Pat Wheaton, the New Zealand father who was blocked from naming his son 4Real.

Wheaton said the idea for the name came when the couple saw the first scan of the child.

"We started thinking 'Jeez, he is for real?'" Wheaton said.
Apparently the morning sickness, tender breasts and swelling belly following unprotected sex were not conclusive enough to convince these geniuses that they were, indeed, about to reproduce.

But when the parents filed the name with New Zealand's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, they were told names beginning with a number were against the rules.

Registrar-General Brian Clarke said the rules are designed to prevent names that are "likely to cause offense to a reasonable person."

Now the pisser is that the only thing standing between these ass-hats naming their kid 4real is a frigging loophole. Numerals are not allowed in New Zealand as part of a name. Sadly there's still a possibility that this kid is gonna be saddled with a name str8 outta Leet.

The government office has opened negotiations with the parents about the name under a policy that says all unusual names must be given case-by-case consideration.

"The name has not at this stage been rejected," Registrar-General Brian Clarke said in a statement Thursday. "We are currently in discussions with the parents ... to clarify the situation."

Clarke said the rules are designed to prevent names that are "likely to cause offense to a reasonable person." Satan and Adolf Hitler were proposed names that have been declined, he said.

If no compromise has been reached by July 9, the baby will be registered as "real," officials say.

There are, of course, people who think this is fine and dandy. Online petitions have already started advocating their right to be unmitigated jackasses. Of course, there are plenty of people out there who think this a good idea and they've made baby naming big business.

Some parents are turning to professional consultants, computer programs, polls and even numerologists to achieve the perfect moniker for their bundle of joy.
"Parents think that if they give their child a unique and special name, the child will become unique and special," said Bruce Lansky, author of "100,000 Baby Names."

Nevaeh, which heaven spelled backwards, has become one of the world's most popular names. But others don't always pass the societal test.

Two boys, one in Michigan and the other in Texas, bear the name ESPN. They were named after the sports network.
Frankly--if you think some cutesy name is gonna insure your kid's gonna be special without doing any of the heavy lifting required to make your child interesting in its own right then you shouldn't be allowed to have a fern, much less a child.

UPDATE "You Can Leave Your Pants On."

Roy Pearson, the judge and lawyer who sued a dry cleaner for 54 million dollars over a lost pair of pants has lost his lawsuit. Now, why doesn't the bar for the District of Columbia look into this.

Off with Their Heads!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Totally forgot to mention this yesterday. Halfway to work there is an abandoned business just beside the highway. It's been many things over the years: laundromat; convenience store; car lot, and probably a couple of other things I've forgotten. I'm driving to work yesterday morning, talking on the cell to Brian. As I get closer to the business I notice a guy standing in the parking lot, a few feet behind a battered and bondoed sedan. He appeared to be administering a field sobriety test to himself--walking along the seams in the concrete, trying to maintain a straight line, arms held out straight from his sides.

I feel it's important to note he was wearing a white button down shirt and black shorts with a white hibiscus pattern, he also had socks pulled halfway up his calves.

~*~
People are offering to buy tomatoes from me. I find this sort of crazy when there's a great farmer's market here.
~*~

Went out to work in the yard this afternoon and found another 3 foot long snake, crossing the patch. No clue what sort. Definitely not a black snake, although it is (errr was) a blackish-brownish color with a subtle diamond pattern. I fetched the machete and played Red Queen with it. Apparently there are a lot of snakes this summer...huzzah. I found myself wishing my grandfather was still alive--he'd have known what it was. I just hope I don't run across a copperhead. Oy god. I'll scream like a girl. Might even tinkle a little.

Intemperate

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I'm an intemperate gardener. Some years I'm fastidious with weeding, fertilizing, pruning and deadheading. Other years I feed the plants and just allow them to grow however they will. The last couple of years, I've done the latter. I wasn't timely with separating and propagating plants so when the time came to divvy up the Hosta "Sagae", Pulmonaria "Roy Davidson," and my dwarf white Astilbe it was quite a job. They hadn't been divided in about 4 years and were huge clumps to contend with. So I took three clumps and ended up with 30 smaller ones. They're all planted now. I still have a clump of Pulmonaria "Mrs. Moon" and a peach Astilbe to divide...I shudder to think about tackling them--they're huge.

~*~

Almost everyone here calls today "Decoration Day" instead of "Memorial Day," because that's what a lot of them do--they go to the cemetery and leave flowers. Usually the local fire hall has some sort of lunch or homecoming thing set up for the out-of-towners and locals to get together and gossip or whatever they call it. I usually don't go to the cemetery today, even though it's just across the field from my place. I go later in the week when no one else is around and leave some fresh cuttings of whatever's blooming on my maternal grandparents' graves. I might have to buy cut flowers this year because aside from Spiderwort, not much else is in bloom.

An elderly couple from Ohio drove up to the house yesterday while I was in the yard. Bella, the shelter rescue wonder dog with separation anxiety issues went nuts barking; Fletcher climbed one of the maples. I was covered in filth from digging up and separating plants. They sat parked in the drive conferring for a few moments--I kept my back to them, replanting hosta. The
woman gets out of the car and says "This used to be the X homestead. My maiden name was X. Would it be okay if we walked around and took pictures--I have pictures from back when it was the X place." Actually, no; no it was not okay. This property no longer belonged to the Xs. It hadn't for at least 50 years.

They didn't say anything when I said, "no;" they just gave me a look indicating they thought I was rude and inhospitable and got in their big loud red truck and drove away. Although they were polite enough, I found the whole thing incredibly nervy and presumptuous. The property no longer belonged to a family member--whatever claim they thought they had to it was forfeited when it was sold.

Had I not been there working in the yard, I know they would have walked around and taken pictures to their hearts' contents--in short they would've reminisced and trespassed, commenting on how it all used to be, then gone to the fire hall for a nice lunch before driving back to Ohio, braking for anything even resembling a curve in the road.

When I told Brian about this today he offered to sit on the front porch in a wifebeater with a shotgun and bottle of bourbon, threatening any and all potential trespassers. Is that love or what?
~*~

Nurseries are bad places for me: too, too tempting. Today was especially rough--they got in a new delivery since I was there Saturday. So many cultivars and varieties that I wanted. So little space and cash and time.
